A Little Night Music Sets Closing Date; Peters and Stritch Extend

The Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music will play its final performance at the Walter Kerr Theatre on January 9, 2011. The show will have played 20 previews and 425 regular performances upon closing. Current stars Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch, who had been scheduled to perform through November 7, have extended their runs as Desiree and Madame Armfeldt and will remain with the show through the closing performance.

In an unusual "split" production, A Little Night Music began performances on November 24, 2009, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury as Desiree and her mother. The show announced a closing date of June 20, 2010, the day of the two stars' final performances, but re-opened instead on July 13 after Peters and Stritch signed on. Both of the current stars have long histories with Sondheim and originated two of his most famous roles: Peters created the role of Dot in Sunday in the Park with George, while Stritch premiered Joanne in Company.

Along with Peters and Stritch, the current cast of A Little Night Music features Stephen R. Buntrock as Fredrik Egerman, Bradley Dean as Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, Erin Davie as Countess Charlotte Malcolm, Leigh Ann Larkin as Petra, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka as Henrik Egerman and Ramona Mallory as Anne Egerman.

No official confirmation has been given regarding a spring tenant for the Walter Kerr, but the theater is rumored to be the future home of the Broadway revival of John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves.
